The small town of Chicken is an outpost in the wilderness alongside Chicken Creek with a handful of hearty souls savoring raw Alaska ...
dog sledding... gold prospecting... ghosts of last century's Alaska gold rush, including Anne Purdy who wrote the acclaimed book
"Tisha"... the Fortymile caribou herd... a float trip on the very historic and scenic 40Mile Wild &
Scenic River... Arctic grayling fishing... fields of brilliant fireweed... wolves... the Northern Lights or Midnight Sun... a gold
pan full of gold nuggets... take your pick, it's all here!. And it can easily be explored from your doorstep in this Alaska RV park,
campground and cabins situated on a bench overlooking the Chicken Creek valley.
, also known as Chicken RV
Park or Chicken Creek Outpost, is just south of the Taylor Highway on Airport Road in the center of Chicken, Alaska. It's built on the site
of a placer gold camp established in the 1930s by the industrious Fairbanks Exploration Company for prospecting and mining Chicken
Creek with the Pedro Dredge, a bucket line gold dredge that is now a National Historic Site. Some
of the historic gold camp and many of the gold mining relics are preserved in an outdoor museum and open to the public.
At the "Chicken Gold Camp & Outpost", you can explore the history of this early Alaska gold rush community,
tour the Pedro gold dredge, which mined Chicken Creek, experience the thrill of panning
your own gold in the RV park and campground or take one of our daily outings to prospect for gold nuggets on our claims.
You may also enjoy an espresso drink in the Outpost while you browse the many handmade gifts: jewelry, clothing,
carvings, paintings, pottery and other Alaska made gifts.
Enjoy wood-fired pizza and an Alaskan micro-brew on the deck of the Outpost with other guests and perhaps some live, local music;
stay the night in the RV park/campground or rent an apartment or log cabin and the
next day enjoy some recreational
gold mining, suction dredging or gold panning after breakfast or a tasty fresh baked
scones with a mocha or latte in the cafe. Chicken is completely "off the grid", so you can expect a
somewhat rustic but comfortable wilderness adventure.
In keeping with the quirky, fun-loving character of the community, the folks at Chicken Gold Camp put on a music
festival every June, usually the 2nd weekend. Chickenstock Music Festival started as a one night, one band local get-together in 2007, but now is one of
Alaska's better known summer weekend music gatherings with 15+ bands entertaining over 1000 guests who all camp together in the RV park,
campground and Chicken Creek valley. We have added an aerial
"chicken peep" drop for the kids, contests for kids of all ages (2 to 92), food & drinks, camping and the chicken dance
led by our own 'chickaneers'. Chickenstock 2015 was recorded live; the CD is available in the Outpost and at the event which will be held June 10th and 11th in 2022.
We invite you to explore our Web site to see the RV park, campground and facilities, the beauty of the Chicken Creek valley
and surrounding mountains and the many ways to enjoy it.
